ENGLISH ARMCHAIR
Rare and outstanding
English three-legged armchair, all ash except an oak seat, circa
1620-40. This chair is a great example of the skill of the turner
and has survived in extraordinary condition, including old finish
and most of its original height. Branded WW on top
of the front posts and top rail, probably by an owner. No restoration.
Ht. 45; W. 26; D. 24. A very similar chair is
the famous Harvard Presidents chair, illustrated in New
England Begins: The Seventeenth Century, vol. 3 (1982) p.
511, #471. Also see Chinnery Oak Furniture, The British Tradition
(1979) p. 92-99.
