Fine watercolor drawing of the residence of G. A. Veil, Liberty, PA, drawn by Charles Frederick Veil and dated March 1884. Veil was born in 1813 in Germany and came to the US in 1834. He did other drawings including another of this house which we sold in 2005. He erected a tannery in Veiltown, near Liberty, PA. Veil's European background is evident in these drawings. Charles Veil died in 1887.

Portrait of a Man, said to be Caleb Cook of Salem, MA, painted by Michael VerVoort (active 1795-1830), a Flemish artist working in Antwerp, Belgium. Signed "M. VerVoort 1829". Oil on canvas, 28" x 26" in original gilt frame.

Fine pastel portrait of Rachel Fox Read of Boston (ca. 1790-1856) painted by William M. S. Doyle (1769-1828), signed and dated 1810. This portrait is early in Doyle's oeuvre and descended in the family of the sitter. Doyle was known primarily for his silhouettes and miniatures, but did pastel portraits as well. (See Kern, The Pastel Portrait of William M. S. Doyle in the Clarin, Fall 1988, p. 41-47. Period gilt frame. 22" x 19".

Rare and important portrait of a woman, oil on paper, circa 1810, by the noted Maine portrait artist, Benjamin Greenleaf (1769-1821).The majority of Greenleaf’s portraits are painted profiles on glass, bust length. Only a few are painted on canvas. This portrait has nearly all other attributes of Greenleaf portraits. 17 3/4" x 13" including frame.

Fine portrait of a boy, oil on canvas, attributed to Ralph Earl, circa 1780. Earl went to England in 1778 and returned to New York in 1785. This portrait has a New York history. The sitter is unknown. 24” x 20” without frame. A similar portrait of William Carpenter by Ralph Earl dated 1779 in the Worcester Art Museum is illustrated in Kornhauser, Ralph Earl 1991, pg. 115 #10.

Fine watercolor on silk, Chinese, late 18th Century, probably painted by a Chinese artist trained by or influenced by Guiseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), the Italian Jesuit painter to the Chinese court in the mid-18th Century. 14 ½” x 15” (sight)

Pair of Chinese Export portraits of young ladies, oil on canvas, circa 1810-20. These stylish paintings are unusually early for this type of portrait. The paintings have not been relined, have original stretchers and are in good condition. Frames are replaced. Site size: 23 ½” x 17 ½”
