Portrait of a Gentleman
Portrait of a gentleman, Boston, circa 1780, attributed to John Johnston (1753-1818). Johnston and Gullager were the two prominent portrait painters in Boston after Copley went to London in 1774. Copley’s influence is obvious. Other portraits by Johnston are in the National Gallery (Washington), MFA, and Bowdoin College. 38 ¼” x 33 ¾” including a period (English) gilt frame. Relined and small areas of in-paint.
